Volkswagen is taking the opportunity of the New York auto show to showcase two new products — the Jetta SportWagen and facelifted Touareg.
VW hopes a sportier design and sportier name will draw buyers for the Jetta wagon, a typically low-volume model. Wagons, along with hatchbacks, don't sell as well in North America as they do in Europe.
In time for the SportWagen launch, VW's 2.5-liter five-cylinder will get a power bump from 150 to 170 horsepower. A 2.0-liter 200-horse turbo four-cylinder and BlueTec diesel will also be available.
Unique to the SportWagen will be an optional panoramic sunroof, bringing in an incredible 12.7 square feet of daylight or starlight.
The Jetta SportWagen 2.5 will arrive in dealerships this autumn, the 2.0 turbo by year's end, the diesel next spring, and a high-performance GLI possibly later.
Still looking very familiar, the Touareg will get a bunch of styling tweaks and new technologies for the 2008 model year. Follow the link below for a rundown. It will go on sale in a couple months.
