Volkswagen's new sixth-generation Golf is the coveted 2009 World Car Of The Year.
The announcement was made at the New York auto show, where VW's popular hatchback is making its US debut.
The Golf beat out two other finalists, the Ford Fiesta and Toyota iQ, which were previously narrowed down from an initial list of 51 new vehicles.
The vehicles are chosen and voted on by a jury of 59 international auto journalists from 25 countries.
Past winners include the Mazda 2 (2008), Lexus LS 460 (2007) and BMW 3 Series (2006).
The hype continues to mount for the new Golf and GTI.
