New Year's 2007 will mark Bernd Pischetsrieder's last day — and Martin Winterkorn's first — as Volkswagen's chief executive officer.
The presidium of the supervisory board of Volkswagen AG and Pischetsrieder agreed upon his resignation, effective Dec. 31. The supervisory board agreed to appoint Martin Winterkorn, currently CEO at Audi, as Pischetsrieder's successor on Jan. 1.
The shuffle at the helm of Europe's largest automaker comes as a bit of a surprise — considering Pischetsrieder's contract was renewed earlier this year until 2012 (see VolksWatch news story Volkswagen CEO's Contract Extended). So much for that "big vote of confidence," as we put it.
A former BMW CEO, Pischetsrieder will continue to work for Volkswagen AG in other functions. Audi's top position has yet to be filled.
On a light note, automotive journalists everywhere look forward to the easier spelling and pronunciation of Winterkorn.
