Germans Vote For SUV Name
July 6, 2006

VW's compact SUV will borrow cues from the Concept A.
The name of Volkswagen's compact SUV may be in the hands of German auto enthusiasts.
Reportedly unable to make a decision, Volkswagen asked readers of the big German publication Auto Bild to vote for their favorite name, from a list of five:
Namib (African desert),
Nanuk (Eskimo for small polar bear),
Rockton (made-up),
Samun (hot desert wind) and
Tiguan (made-up).
Not included were two names previously thought contenders, Beduin and Marrakesh.
One of the readers who voted for the winning name will get a free SUV bearing the name.
It's not clear, however, if the name with the most votes will be the winning name. The exercise could be a PR stunt with Volkswagen making the final decision regardless of final tallies.
VW is expected to announce the winning name very soon, possibly as early as this month. Stay tuned to VolksWatch for the latest.
