Due out in 2008, Volkswagen's new compact SUV has a name: Tiguan.
Readers of the German publication Auto Bild helped choose the name. More than 350,000 votes were cast among five possibilities set by the automaker: Namib, Nanuk, Rockton, Samun and Tiguan.
It's not known by how many votes Tiguan won but VW calls it "the clear winner."
"This unique event is demonstrative of how Volkswagen is opening up," commented brand boss Wolfgang Bernhard. "We made a clear appeal to the market — potential buyers could help choose the name Tiguan. The positive reaction shows that this is the right approach."
In February Volkswagen offered a glimpse of the Tiguan with its Concept A (see VolksWatch news story Concept Previews VW's Small SUV).
Production versions of the SUV will be rolled out at auto shows in coming months. Stay tuned to VolksWatch for the latest news and photos.
