LA Auto Show: Drop-Dead Gorgeous Tiguan

The Tiguan has shown its face — and, from all angles, it looks drop-dead gorgeous!

Volkswagen's compact SUV is making its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. While called a concept, the Tiguan pictured here is a dead ringer for the vehicle that will go on sale by mid-2008.

The Tiguan appears powerful, even standing still, with sleek lines and muscular swells on the fenders and hood. The headlights, taillights and grille flow with the body. Clear ovals in the taillights have become a stylish VW family trait.

The concept wears big 19-inch wheels with orange Continental rubber — expect these to be downsized and uncolored for the production version.

The interior is unmistakably Volkswagen with gauges, knobs, buttons and other controls similar to other models. The dual-circle vents are new and look fabulous. It is not clear whether the expansive panoramic sunroof will make it to production.

Under the hood, the concept showcases VW's next-generation "clean" diesel technology, called BlueTec, a collaboration with Audi and Mercedes. The production Tiguan will likely get a diesel engine at some point but initial power is more likely to come from VW's 150-horse five-cylinder, suitable to a small SUV because of its strong 170 pound-feet of torque, and 200-horse 2.0T turbo four-cylinder. A range-topping 280-horse VR6 is also a strong possibility.

Most versions will have all-wheel drive.

Honda with its CR-V, Toyota with its RAV4, as well as other automakers are no doubt taking notice of the Tiguan. If recent market strategies hold, Volkswagen will price the Tiguan competitively like it has the Eos, Rabbit and GTI.

Being the most affordable European SUV and being built in Germany will only help Tiguan sales.

More details on the Tiguan will be available in the months to come. Stay tuned to VolksWatch.
